Ecologically, Bhutan is a hot spot in the Himalayas. And 65-70% of the land is decreed by law to be kept under forest cover. The number of visitors is restricted by a government regulated tour and tariff system. This policy ensures protection of its natural habitats and also that every Bhutanese benefits from the income generated by tourism. Geographically, it is an interesting place starting with the sub-tropics in the south (150m above sea level), to temperate vegetation (2000-3000m) and then to Alpine vegetation (above 3000m) in the north. This variation allows many species of fauna and flora to thrive in many different zones. Since hunting is prohibited, the fauna is well protected. Jigme Dorji National Park, the second largest among the ten natural preserves in the country, offers spectacular Himalayan vistas of awe-inspiring scenic beauties and an enchanted mix of cultural and wildlife experiences. The Takin Festival, held every February in Gasa in honour of Bhutan’s unusual National Animal, is to showcase this rich natural heritage and raise awareness on conservation of biodiversity. It is also geared to create avenues and strive towards financial sustainability of the park management, provide off-season ecotourism possibilities and supplemental income to the park residents, specifically the upland communities. Gasa Dzongkhag is the least populated district in the country, but it is the richest in terms of medicinal plants and temperate biodiversity. The district is also very famous for its hot springs and medicinal baths and is declared as an organic district. On this trip you will travel from 3,000ft to 13,500ft altitude where you will see the dramatic changes in the vegetation and the life it supports.
