Our founder, Marie Brown, is appointed Regional Manager of the Bhutan Travel Service (NY, NY) the first and only Tourist Office outside of Bhutan approved by the Royal Kingdom‘s Organization of National Tourism Promotion to exclusively operate and handle all U.S.-booked inbound tours to the Kingdom of Bhutan.

 

The kingdom’s first whitewater rafting expedition was comprised of key members Wick Walker (international whitewater world championship 1965, ’67, ’71 and 1972 founder of U.S. Olympic whitewater paddling team), Eric Evans (winner of 9 out of 10 U.S. titles through 1978), and Jamie McEwan (Olympic Bronze medalist 1972).

Official paperwork for certificate of incorporation filed. The private travel agency Bhutan Travel, Inc. is formed.

 

The established trade publication Travel Agent Magazine (Dec 1987, Apr 1988), the New York Times (Apr 1988), and the Los Angeles Times (Jun 1989) highlight Bhutan Travel’s transformation from royally-appointed tourist office to privately run travel agency, and recommend our exclusive tour offering.

 

Bhutan Travel contributes expert content to the “Nepal and Bhutan Area Handbook“, part of the Country Study Series, a resource guide of aggregate knowledge on a particular region or country prepared by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress under sponsorship from the Department of the Army.
